Simon J Baker (Organist & Director of Music)

Simon J Baker hails from Forsbrook in Stoke on Trent and was born in 1984.  From an early age he had a keen interest in music both listening and performing.  After first teaching himself to play the piano he began lessons with Sandra Barrow at the age of twelve, and achieved Grade 8 in 2001.  Simon began learning the organ at the age of thirteen, again teaching himself at first and later began lessons with Anthony Thorley.  Not long after beginning lessons he achieved Grade 5 with distinction and then later achieved Grade 7 with merit.  Alongside Piano and Organ, Simon also studied Theory and Cello.  In 2002 Simon was examined and was awarded a Diploma in Church Liturgical Accompaniment from the North and Midlands School of Music (DipNMSM).  In 2004 Simon was elected a Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers.

Simon's church training as a chorister began at the age of thirteen at St. Peter's Church Forsbrook under the direction of Margaret Dale.  During this time he sang regularly with the choir and soon began to accompany choir practices and services.  At the same time, Simon became Organist and Choir trainer at St. Margaret's Church, Draycott; a post which he held for 6 years.  During this time he raised a choir of 15 members.  In 2001, Simon took up the post of Deputy Organist and Musical Director at St. Edward's Church, Cheddleton.  As well as holding these posts, Simon has acted as a deputy organist at St. Mary and All Saints, Checkley, Blythe Bridge Methodist Church and various other churches throughout Stoke on Trent.  He has been asked on a number of occasions to play for both the Bishop of Stafford and Bishop of Lichfield.  During his time playing at churches within the Stoke deanery he has also accompanied services at both Chester and Lichfield Cathedrals.  As well as work within local churches, Simon held the post of accompanist to the Blythe Bridge Singers for three years and travelled around the area accompanying a variety of concerts.  Together with accompanying Simon also sang as a member of the Ceramic City Choir for a year before University.
